With England shockingly announcing today that some of their mightiest lions including, Mason Greenwood and Jesse Lingard would be omitted from Gareth Southgate’s Euro 2020 squad.

We take a look at some of the best players throughout the years, who shone for their clubs but surprisingly did not receive a senior England cap in their career.

1) Steve Bruce

Before being pelted with cabbages and mocked by many. Steve Bruce was a fine and dominant centre half for Fergie’s Man United throughout the 90’s. Despite notably winning three Premier League titles and three FA Cups, Bruce was constantly overlooked for England and was only able to play for and captain the England B team in 1987 against Malta. England manager Terry Venables offered Bruce an international cap in 1994 but Bruce, a man of pride, wanted a call up based on merit, not sympathy.

2) Mark Atkins

Mark Atkins was integral to Blackburn’s rise and helped guide them to their historic Premier League title in 1995. In that season, Atkins formed a strong midfield partnership with Tim Sherwood, scoring vital goals along the way. Atkins made 257 appearances for the club. He played all but four games that season before being replaced by David Batty, who was ultimately favoured over Atkins in the England setup.

3) Mark Noble

The curse of the Mark returns. Sharing the name and position of the man above, Mark Noble has been a longstanding servant of West Ham United Football Club. With many perceiving Noble as immobile and bland. His industrious and tenacious character as well as his undeniable passing and set piece quality are central to why he was voted the clubs player of the decade. With 544 career appearances and 124 goal contributions, it remains an enigma as to why such a powerful player and leader was left out of the England dressing room.

4) Kevin Nolan

One of the biggest surprise absentees from England’s team must be the chicken man himself, Kevin Nolan. Nolan was a tenacious, physical and much-loved versatile midfielder who was a part of Bolton’s wonderous European journey. He was a key player for Newcastle and West Ham also and despite Sam Allardyce being made England manager and full of adoration for the player, Nolan ended his career as the man with the most top-flight appearances without an England cap. What the cluck!

5) Marc Albrighton

The Mark/Marc vendetta returns. Marc Albrighton was another individual vital to his teams success and was another player who seemed deserved of an England call up. Albrighton featured in every single game in Leicester’s title winning season and whilst the likes of Danny Drinkwater and Jamie Vardy were called up to the national ranks, Albrighton was forgotten despite his creative contributions to the teams heroic feat and looks certain of sadly not receiving international accreditations.
